Helpful Tips
Storage
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
- Freeze in a zip-lock bag or airtight container for up to 3 months.
- No reheating needed. Eat straight from the fridge, or let frozen balls sit at room temperature for 5–10 minutes before eating.
Substitutions
- Swap the peanut butter for almond butter or cashew butter.
- Swap the honey for maple syrup.
- Plant-based protein powder works, but you’ll likely need the full amount of milk.
- Swap the chocolate chips for cacao nibs or chopped roasted peanuts.
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy with a piece of fruit or a tub of Greek yoghurt for a more filling afternoon snack. They also travel well in a lunchbox or training bag.
Ingredients
Dry ingredients:
- 110g quick oats (1¼ cups)
- 125g chocolate protein powder
- 20g cacao or cocoa powder (3 tbsp)
- 50g dark chocolate chips (¼ cup)
- Pinch of salt
Wet ingredients:
- 120g smooth peanut butter (½ cup)
- 60ml honey (¼ cup)
- 30–60ml milk of choice (⅛–¼ cup)
Directions
- If your peanut butter is firm, warm it with the honey in a small microwave-safe bowl for 15–20 seconds, then stir until smooth and runny.
- Add the oats, protein powder, cacao powder, chocolate chips and salt to a large bowl and stir until the cacao and protein powder are evenly mixed through the oats.
- Pour the peanut butter and honey mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is evenly coated and crumbly.
- Add a splash of milk and mix well, using your hands if it’s easier. Keep adding milk a little at a time until the mixture holds together firmly when you squeeze it.
- Roll heaped tablespoons of the mixture into balls. Lightly damp hands will stop it sticking.
- Place the balls on a tray lined with baking paper and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, until firm, before eating.
